Mavis Leno will appear on theWeidnerCenter stage tomorrow evening, launching the 2007 Bellin Health LifeLines Series.
Mavis Leno has become a champion against the profound mistreatment of women in Afghanistan.In 1997 she joined the Board of Directors of the Feminist Majority Foundation, becoming chair of the Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan.Leno has worked for years to aid women suffering under the extremist Taliban regime. With school and work forbidden, women are unable to leave home unless accompanied by a man, and are beaten, even killed, for infractions of Taliban law.
Leno works tirelessly to educate Americans on abuses happening world wide. Her activism extends to WashingtonD.C. where she urges politicians and decision makers to take a closer look at these gross injustices. She encourages women around the country to take action, voice their concern and extend compassion and strength to Afghan women who live in constant fear and danger.
Her recent television appearances include Larry King Live, Today, CNN with Paula Zahn, Hardball, MSNBC Nightly News and The Tonight Show. Ms. Leno has also been featured in articles in Time, Newsweek, TheLos Angeles Times, TheWashington Post, Vanity Fair, US Magazine, and People magazine.
